Oblomov is a novel by Ivan Goncharov (1859) that, through a satirical and psychological lens, criticizes the lethargy and self-indulgent lifestyle of the Russian aristocracy in the nineteenth century. The protagonist, Ilya Ilyich Oblomov, is a retired civil servant whose life passes in inactivity, sleep, and withdrawal from society. The efforts of his friend Andrei and his beloved Olga to change him fail, and Oblomov remains trapped in his inertia until the end of his life—a condition that came to be known as “Oblomovism.”

Ivan Goncharov, a Russian writer educated at Moscow University and fluent in several languages, introduced with this novel a new concept into world literature. Oblomovism symbolizes lack of willpower, weakness of character, and a kind of paralysis that can become not only an individual but also a social malaise. The novel played an important role in the development of psychological realism in Russian literature and was praised by major writers such as Tolstoy and Dostoevsky.
