Hindi has been the official language of the Union of India for over sixty years now. Still there are some serious issues related to the degree of its use for official purposes and its spread as well as acceptance in the society as a whole. This book highlights the socio-cultural and multilingual realities of post-Independence India and tries to examine Hindi in the context of these realities. Investigating the functional use of Hindi in various domains, it discusses at length people's acceptance of it and their loyalty as well as attitudes towards it. Also, it presents a critical assessment of the language policies and programmes pursued by the Government of India. About The Author: Dr Uday Kumar is presently working on the project 'Socio-linguistics of English in Urban India' at the Centre for English Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Earlier he has taught English Language and Literature at Shri Aurobindo College (Evening), University of Delhi, and at the Department of Linguistics, M.S. University of Baroda, Vadodara. Also, the was awarded the fellowship of Indian Institute of Advanced Study where he worked on the topic 'Multi-lingualism, Cultural Identity and National Integration: A Case Study of the North-Eastern States of India.'
