The Rise of Middle Classes In Manipur It is considered that there is a gap in the understanding of therole of Middle Classes in Manipur. In the month of September, 2011a one day symposium was organized under the aegis of Centre forSocial Studies (proposed) at Imphal on the subject. We invited somescholars of Social Sciences to present their papers on the subject.We also requested Professor Ghanshyam Shah, National Fellow in theIndian Institute of Advanced Study at Shimla. He was kind enough tosend a brief note which was the talking point of the symposium. Theparticipants of the symposium are named among the contributors towhom I am extremely grateful.
