A Major Research Project pursued under the aegis of the UGC culminated in an insightful yet accessible book that provides an understanding into a range of issues, particularly pertaining to the women, that are currently on the National agenda. So long as the women in India were seen as beneficiaries and not as the citizens with rights the formulation and progress of mass welfare programmes designed to eliminate their poverty remained tardy. It is only recently that the country was moving from a charity model of poverty alleviation to a rights-based approach. A shift from the patronage approach to participatory approach proved reasonably successful in attaining the set goals in respect of the emancipation of women.
