Swami Vivekananda, whose pre-monastic name was Narendranath Dutt, was one of the most famous and influential social reformers of the 19th century. A redoubtable spiritual leader, he was an exponent of Vedanta. He was the most eminent disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahansa and the founder of Ramakrishna Math as well as Ramakrishna Mission. This book provides deep insight into the life and achievements of Swami Vivekananda. Describing his family background and early life, it presents a detailed account of how he came into contact with Sri Ramakrishna, the moulding of his life as a monk, Ramakrishna's illness and death, the building of the Math, his teachings, and his foreign tours to spread the message of peace and universal brotherhood as well as the philosophy of Vedanta, with special reference to his lecture at the World Parliament of Religions at Chicago. Dr. Dushyanta Pandya has a long association of over six decades with the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Presently, he is the president of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Centre, Jamnagar. Earlier, he was the convener of the centre. He is also closely associated with Ramakrishna Jyot, a Gujarati monthly published by the Ramakrishna Ashram, Rajkot. Dr. Pandya has written a good number of books, including one on Montessori Method of teaching. Also, he has translated several books of Swami Ranganathananda, Swami Jitatmananda and Swami Chetanananda into Gujarati, as well as fifty Gujarati poems of Umashankar Joshi into English.
