Pakistan in Search of Identity The author has taken pains to investigate the multifariousideological crisis of Pakistan. Without subscribing to anypreconceived notion, he looks into the issues of ideology andidentity purely from historical and political points of views. Hisapproach is objective and rational and he looks into the issues ofstate formation in Pakistan and Pakistan's quest for nationhood ina scientific manner underlining the socio-economic causes operatingbehind the political events. He beings with the examination of theemergence of the Muslims consciousness about their identity in thesocio-cultural environment of pre-partition India. he then moves onto examine hoe the issues of identity resurfaced in Pakistan afterits independence. He examines the various trends, both secular andreligious, which continued for years to combat each other. Thepolicies of the state, its efforts in securing legitimacy throughemploying religious propaganda, the construction of an officialreligious ideology and the implications of all these moves alsocome under critical scrutiny. The author also endeavors to analysethe integrated as well as separating aspects of the co-relationbetween religion and politics. He also sheds light on the politicaleconomy of Islamisation and explains how in a growing environmentof commercialization, the politicisation of religious affiliationimpacts the society in a negative way. The view expressed in this book would certainly invite debateand would encourage others to build up on what has been concludedhere on, while contesting this, come up with better arguments andbetter explanations of the issues addressed here.
