Numismatic Gleanings The present work contains thirty-three articles of the authorsonsome unique, interesting and significant coins and sigilswhichthrow flashes of light on various aspects of the history,culture,religion, art, economy, trade and commerce, science andtechnologyof the people of India in different periods of its longhistory. Itis for the first time that minuscule copper punch-markedcoins fromVidisha have been brought to light which acquaint us ofthe localeconomy during the later half of the first millennium BCE.Theuniface cast copper coins collected from eastern Malwa andKhandeshregion establish relationship of the area with the Deccanwhich hasyielded similar coins. Coins of the city-state ofHathodakaindicate the role the city-states played in thedevelopment oftrade and commerce in the Narmada valley during theearly centuriesbefore the commencement of the Common Era. About the Authors: Dev Devendra Handa, Major M.K. Gupta Devendra Handa is the recipient of Sir Mortimer WheelerPrize,Maulana Azad and Archaeological Centenary Memorial medals(1964),Lowick Memorial Grant of the Royal Numismatic Society,London (1992and 2007), Pandit Bhagwanlal Indraji Medal of theIndian CoinSociety (2007) and Nelson Wright Medal of the NumismaticSociety ofIndia (2010). He was felicitated with Life-timeAchievement Awardby the NSI and Indian Coin Society in 2008 atIndore and hasrecently been honoured with Karmayogi Samman by theHaryanaInstitute of Fine Arts (2012). After his retirement from thePanjabUniversity, Chandigarh he enjoyed Fellowship of theIndianInstitute of Advanced Study, Shimla (2000-03), SeniorFellowship(Numismatics) of the Ministry of Culture, GOI, New Delhi(2003-05)and Senior Academic Fellowship of the ICHR, New Delhi(2009-11).
