‘Any man who doesn’t want to get on in the world, to make a million dollars, and maybe even park his toothbrush in White House, hasn’t got as much to him as a good dog has – he’s nothing more or less than a vegetable.’

The name of F. Scott Fitzgerald is perhaps one of the foremost of the last century, and generations of readers have been enchanted by the heady glamour of his novella The Great Gatsby – but few have discovered The Vegetable, or, From President to Postman, the only play he wrote.

Meet Jerry Frost, a thirty-five-year-old railroad clerk. Winding up in mid-life unhappy with his lot, without the great career triumphs he had hoped for, Jerry has his heart set on the presidency – that is, if he can’t make it as a postman…

A comedic triumph satirising ambition and the American Dream by one of the world’s most beloved writers, this edition readies The Vegetable to rejoin the bookshelves.
