“Maqalat-e Shams” (Discourses of Shams) is a collection of sayings and conversations attributed to Shams al-Din Muhammad Tabrizi, recorded during his presence in Konya. It is one of the most important sources for understanding Shams’s thoughts, personality, and mystical worldview. Beyond reflecting his spiritual and philosophical perspectives, the work provides valuable insights into his relationship with Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi (Mawlana) and the profound influence of their encounter on Rumi’s life and intellectual development.

In these discourses, Shams speaks with a direct, concise, and often unconventional style about subjects such as love, spiritual knowledge, mystical journey, truth, religion, humanity, and the relationship between outward forms and inner realities. His manner of expression differs from the structured style of formal literary works, and this quality transforms “Maqalat-e Shams” into a living text that preserves the atmosphere of his conversations and gatherings. The book also helps clarify some of the ambiguities and narratives that have developed around Shams and his relationship with Rumi.

The present edition, edited by Jafar Modarres Sadeghi and published by Nashr-e Markaz, is based on a scholarly examination of six ancient manuscripts and comparison with seven later copies. In preparing this edition, passages considered less relevant to the original text have been separated in order to provide readers with a more coherent presentation of Shams’s discourses.

“Maqalat-e Shams” is a fundamental work for those interested in Persian mysticism, classical Persian literature, Shams Tabrizi, Rumi, and the history of Sufism. It offers a closer encounter with the thoughts of the man whose meeting with Rumi became a turning point in the poet’s life and works.
