Hafez: The Divan, Edited by Sayeh is regarded as one of the most complete and authoritative critical editions of Hafez’s poetry, prepared by Hooshang Ebtehaj (pen name: Sayeh). Possessing exceptional artistic sensitivity, a lifelong familiarity with Hafez, and a deep spiritual affinity with the great mystic—an affinity reflected even in his own poetry—Sayeh was uniquely equipped to produce a refined and reliable edition of the Divan. His work was further strengthened by the guidance of the distinguished scholar Mohammad-Reza Shafi‘i Kadkani.

Although numerous editions—such as those by Qazvini, Jalali Na’ini, Afshar, and others—have been produced in recent decades, and some have even involved intrusive alterations to Hafez’s verse, Sayeh’s edition stands out for its distinct merits. It is regarded not only as one of the finest but also as one of the most commendable and methodologically sound approaches to editing the Divan of Hafez. In several cases, this edition succeeds in resolving textual ambiguities and long-standing interpretive difficulties within Hafez’s poems.
