Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay is considered as one of the most popular Bengali novelists of the 20th century. His stories are very striking for their obvious sincerity and basic realism. He was born into poverty and most of his writing reflects his life in many forms. His works represent the rural Bengali society and the plight and oppression faced by women during that period. He wrote strongly against all the social superstitions and narrow mindedness that had engulfed the country. His stories further reflected the social reforms that were taking place against these oppressions. In Devdas, Parinita, Biraj Bau and Palli Samaj the themes and their treatment are very different and they are presented in a modernistic setting and in an easy and matter-of-fact language. Chatterjee's works have been repeatedly translated into all the major Indian languages.
