This first Indian novel set in New Zealand, six yards of silk, flows between both countries, through memory and loss, tastes and sensations.. as sharmila seeks to understand the mysterious disappearance of her brother, Ramesh. The arrival of her aunt Meenamma deepens sharmila's journey exploring what we take with us and what we leave behind if we weave a life between one end of the globe and the other.Like a sari folds and wraps around a woman's body this story intertwines and unfolds Ramesh and Sharmila's lives in a story that resonates as a deeply human search for redempation wherever we are. Six yards of silk is a deeply moving and haunting story that resonates with love, belonging, losing and finally coming to terms with the loss of a beloved one. Six yards of silk deftly uses the sari as a metaphor for events in life that often take a delicate handling for it to fall into place. It will mesmerise the reader, taking him into the several folds that a sari presents to the eye, which then cornes together as a neat jigsaw, with all the pieces sitting comfortably, with a sense of belonging. Next to each other.
