“I am not without admiration for the Mahatma. Yet, I have been frequently critical of him in this biography. This is inevitable if a biographer is to speak his mind freely about the man and his institutions, his politics and his public work.” Dhananjay keer's exhaustive work on Mahatma Gandhi carries with it the weight of history. From the biographer of savannah and Ambedkar, this is a crucial biography of the father of the nation. This new and revised edition contains not only updated references but also a previously unpublished English translation of Lokamanya Tilak's 1918 foreword to the first published biography of Gandhi by avantikabai Gokhale. The foreword is invaluable in understanding the influences of Tilak and Gandhi on each other from 1915 to 1920 - and of the growth of the nationalist movement in India as a whole.
