This much acclaimed work by Mamta Rao is a brilliant, well researched and systematically organised study of the law relating to women and children. Numerous laws/amendments essential for the effective enforcement of basic human rights relating to women and children have been passed since the release of the first edition. The author has in depth discussed the various crimes committed against women such as rape, dowry death, prostitution, female foeticide, sexual harassment at workplace, domestic violence, obscenity and indecent representation of women etc. in the light of prevalent law. A notable development in the law relating to women has been the enactment of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 which includes not merely physical violence but sexual, emotional, psychological and economic violence as well. Another significant development has been the much-awaited Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005 that grants women equal property rights in ancestral property. In the area of protection of children, issues such as child-labour, trafficking, abuse and juvenile delinquency have been discussed, and the significant developments in the law relating to children such as the recently enacted Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005; Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2006 and Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Act, 2006, have been analysed.
